A Farewell to Christopher Hitchens

Christopher Hitchens, the polarizing author and essayist, died on Thursday night at M.D. Anderson Cancer Center in Houston due to complications of esophageal cancer. He was 62. I didn’t agree with everything he wrote about in his lifetime, but I admired his stand as an atheist in a world which places so much emphasis on religion.

I thought he was brilliant.

While I was looking through the web for things about Hitchens, I found this 45 minute or so video called Stephen Fry and Friends on the life, loves and hates of Christopher Hitchens. This is really a special piece, recorded shortly before his death, and says more than I can:

Obama to do The View on Thursday

NEW YORK — ABC’s “The View” has welcomed many notable guests, but none more prominent than President Barack Obama, who is scheduled to visit for Thursday’s edition.

In making the announcement on Monday, executive producers Barbara Walters and Bill Geddie said this marks the first time a sitting U.S. president has visited a daytime talk show.

They said the majority of the hour will be devoted to Obama’s appearance, which will touch on topics including jobs, the economy, the Gulf oil spill and family life inside the White House. It is scheduled to tape on Wednesday.

“We are so pleased and honored,” Walters said.

Walters will make a special return to the studio for the occasion, joining co-hosts Whoopi Goldberg, Joy Behar, Elisabeth Hasselbeck and Sherri Shepherd. Other than a brief segment broadcast from her home this month, Walters has been off the air since undergoing open-heart surgery in May and had not planned to be back until September.

I’m looking forward to Whoopi’s comments… a lot of Liberals are getting less than happy with Obama, and Whoopi has gotten into it several times this year… I expect, though, that nothing argumentative will come out of this visit.
