She hid Mob Boss Whitey Bulger for 16 years…

Catherine Greig,

… and now they want to see to it that Catherine Greig, 61 year old girlfriend to the 82 year old Bulger, is sentenced to 10 years for harboring a fugitive and a number of other charges. Although the charges Greig faces could result in a maximum of 15 years in prison, prosecutors have said she could get as little as 32 months. The prosecution recommended a longer prison term and asked that Greig pay a $150,000 fine.

Bulger, who gained his reputation as head of Boston’s Winter Hill Gang, was captured last year and has yet to be brought to Federal Court. He had covered his tracks during his career by working as an FBI informant, but used the information he gained in that role to commit a number of murders of his competitors in the crime world. He fled in late 1994 when an FBI agent told him he was about to be indicted.

According to prosecutors, Bulger and Greig spent the first year on the run posing as a married couple, traveling to Chicago, New York and Louisiana. They settled in Santa Monica, where they lived in a rent-controlled apartment not far from the Pacific Ocean. Behind a secret wall in the two-bedroom apartment, Bulger stashed 30 weapons and more than $820,000 in cash.

Pepper Spray Incident – Is this becoming typical?

From Gawker:

Santa Monica College Campus Police Pepper-Sprayed This Tiny Child Last Night

It wasn’t just students protesting tuition hikes who were blasted with pepper spray by campus police at Santa Monica College yesterday. This child—apparently a 4-year-old girl—was also hit. The students, and child, were pepper-sprayed to prevent them from “storming”—i.e. attending—a board of trustee’s meeting.

Is anyone keeping track of the misuses of pepper spray by badged authorities lately. The number is going up and the victims are turning out to be more and more non-criminal.

I am wondering if there are rules for pepper spray use which are equivalent to firearms use in, say, crowds of students (yeah, I remember Kent State) or laborers.

My guess is that there is not.

Why aren’t they prosecuting Whitey for EVERYTHING?

James "Whitey" Bulger

Who says the elusive Bulger still has no influence in Boston?

The Federal prosecutors have moved to drop a 1994 racketeering indictment against mob boss “Whitey” Bulger including charges of extortion, loan sharking, witness tampering and conspiracy.

U.S. Attorney Carmen Ortiz says prosecutors consider a later 1999 indictment charging Bulger with 19 murders the stronger case, since faces life in prison on those charges. Doesn’t he also face life if you add the other charges? Maybe several lives.

Why take a chance with a guy who already eluded them for 16 years?

A Quote to Kick Off Your Afternoon…

“They found him? Finally. I want my sister to come home.”

– Margaret McCusker, Catherine Greig’s sister, when told of Greig and Whitey Bulger‘s arrest.

McCusker lives in Whitey’s old stomping grounds of South Boston. I guess she doesn’t realize that her sister is implicated in one of the 19 murders as a co-defendent.

Here’s to the FBI – they’ve finally nabbed Whitey Bulger…

It took 16 years with James “Whitey” Bulger on top of the FBI’s 10 Most Wanted list, but yesterday they grabbed the former gang leader, alleged murderer (wanted for 19 killings) and all-around bad Bostonian in Santa Monica, CA.

Bulger had a $2 Million reward on his head… the highest ever offered on an FBI wanted criminal. His girlfriend, Catherine Greig, also captured had a $100 Thousand reward attached to her.

At one time Bulger was an FBI informant and used that position as a means of actually committing robberies and murders and getting his competition out of the way. His brother, William “Billy” Bulger had been a well-known Boston politician and, later, the President of the University of Massachusetts, and admittedly withheld information on Whitey for years,

eventually costing him his job.

However, it was only recently after years of embarrassment with books and movies made about Whitey that the FBI actually stepped up it’s investigation. Recently they started focusing on Greig, a former Dental Hygienist known to frequent beauty parlors and plastic surgeons, as a means of capturing Whitey. Recently, in this context, the released a video in cities where Bulger had been spotted over the years:

There has been no mention of who, if anyone, received any of the awards for information leading to Bulger and Greig.

Blake Edwards dies at Age 88…

The great film director, writer, creator of the Pink Panther and husband of Julie Andrews died with his wife and children at his side.

From Yahoo:

Edwards, 88, died from complications of pneumonia Wednesday evening at St. John’s Health Center in Santa Monica, Calif., after being hospitalized for about two weeks. He had knee problems, had undergone unsuccessful procedures and was “pretty much confined to a wheelchair for the last year-and-a-half or two,” said publicist Gene Schwam, who knew him for 40 years.

At the time of his death, Edwards was working on two Broadway musicals, one based on the “Pink Panther” movies. The other, “Big Rosemary,” was to be an original comedy set during Prohibition, Schwam said.

The list of films he created, wrote and/or directed was an amazing collection of contemporary classics, including:
