This will probably be the last time in the next two weeks that I can be on the air, given my forthcoming hospital visit next week. So… I’ll be thrilled to get your call-ins on “Talk To Me” (304-876-5369).b You can talk about anything you want to, as usual, or make an esoteric music request that you challenge me to find in a few minutes… it’s always fun for me.
If you are not in the 50 mile radius of WSHC at 89.7 FM, Shepherdstown WV, then you can go to 897wshc.org/listen-live. There are folks all over the country who listen, now (and a few friends in other countries) and I look forward to playing for everyone.
So, tune in this morning to “Talk To Me”. BTW, my daughter, Cassandra (from Connecticut) is my guest this morning. You can talk to her, too.
- My congratulations to Stephen Skinner…My best wishes to Elliot Simon (underthelobsterscope.wordpress.com)
- Hey radio fans… we have a special schedule today due to football season: (underthelobsterscope.wordpress.com)
My “Talk To Me” show will be on WSHC this morning from 10:30 AM to Noon. We’ll have 90 minutes for your eclectic song requests, discussion of politics with 3 days to go until all of this is decided, and perhaps some comments on the results of Sandy.
If you are too far away to call in at 304-876-5369 remember you can also Listen Live at our web site from anywhere in the world. Just go to 579WSHC.org and click on “Listen Live” and you can join our regular morning call-in group (join Ralph, Stu, Bobby and Oinky and the rest of the gang… we’d love to have you on the team.
Elliott Simon’s shown is on before ours from 9:00 to 10:30 AM.
OK… I’m putting my show together so I can get out of the house on time.
Our regular schedule at WSHC (89.7 FM) is back this week, so my show, Talk To Me, is on from 11 AM to 1 PM and I’ll be taking calls from listeners at 304.876.5369. Remember, if you are not in our listening area (which unfortuneately ony covers about 50 miles around Shepherdstown, WV) you can listen live on the web site: http://897wshc.org.
As usual, I am putting together the list of songs I’d like to play on the show, but I expect my regular callers and more will call in with hard to find requests (which I usually pull out of the air) and their music, as usual, outplays mine. It’s really worth listening to if you have a desire to hear work from the 40s, 50s or 60s. Those are the years most of the requests fall into.
I also expect Ralph Petrie to show up around noon for one of my favorite parts of the show, The Petrie Dish. Ralph brings in his historic music list which really educates all of us on the history of rock ‘n roll.
I love the Saturday show and I hope you might as well.
Elly, of course, is upset that she has to get up so early to take me into the station. John usually picks me up on his way in.
So right now I’m putting my music list together. I’ll be taking requests for music at 304-876-5369 if you want to hear yourself on the air.
I’ve had a bad day today… physically tripped up by a small seizure while I was doing dishes and an afternoon of trying to stay awake. This is, unfortunately, what life has become… I can’t drive (by law…until I’ve gone a year without a seizure as certified by a doctor) and, since Elly works (which I can’t do outside of the house), I bounce off the walls and am bombarded by televised boredom. If it were not for my laptop and the internet I might as well be in a coma.
So I guess I’m going to start writing something outside of my blog. There is a joy in constructing ideas out of words which I am beginning to look forward to each morning. What I do with what I write is not apparent right now, but I expect it will be realized sooner or later.
I’m tending toward creating a radio drama that I might be able to add to my Saturday show at WSHC, or do with John on the Friday morning show. I’ve been researching radio scripts from the 30s and 40s and I find them fascinating. Some are funny, some are adventures, all of them are strongly character-based since there is little opportunity for scenery (other than sound effects) in radio work.
When I get something finished I’ll let you know.

Shepherd University is loaded with alumni this weekend and there is a home football game which is covered on WSHC starting at 11 AM. That means that my show, Talk To Me, is only 1 hour long and starts at 10 AM.
I’m putting my short list of songs on my playlist now and that will keep me from blog posting until I’m back home after 10 AM.
If you want to listen at 10, but are outside of the fifty mile or so tuning radius for 89.7, you can listen live on the WSHC web site:
http://897wshc.org. When you get there, click on “Listen Live”.

I’m over in the outer studio at WSHC 89.5 as Elliot Simon finishes up the last hour of his show. I’m setting up my music list for the two hours I’ll be on the air from 11 AM to 1 PM (and, by the way, if you are out of our very small listening area, you can hear the show on the internet by going to http://897wshc.org/ and clicking on “listen live”. Actually, I have friends and family all over the country who listen, so I know we have the reach.
This is the first time in several weeks that I’ve been able to do the show, since I had my accident, broke a bunch of bones and was in the hospital, then laid up at home for quite a while. When I was finally able to move around last week we went to Wisconsin for my son’s wedding, so I missed last Saturday as well. But the “Talk To Me” show is back on today… if you want to call in and talk or request a song, the number is 304-876-5369.
Since this is one of my favorite activities, this is a happy day. I hope my pal Ralph Petrie gets in for the12 to 1 hour so we can have the segment we call “The Petrie Dish”… no one knows more about popular music history than Ralph and it’s fun to get questions answered.
Bye, now… tune in if you can.
I’ve been thinking lately about how much I enjoy doing the two radio programs I’m on each week (got my Saturday show, Talk To Me, tomorrow from 11 to 1) and don’t really know what I’d do without them. Fortunately John picks me up and drives me home on Fridays and my wife gets me to the station on Saturdays and Ralph Petrie drives me home. As long as this keeps up, I have no problems.
So now I’m putting together the song list for tomorrow morning’s show, plus picking a couple of comedy bits from the Bob and Ray collection, and going over various talking points to cover. Lately I’ve been getting quite a few call-ins — especially challenge requests for rare songs — so the show has been quite a project.
If you want to call in tomorrow, the number is 304-876-5369… and no matter where you are, you can listen live on the internet at http://www.897wshc.org.
So NPR will be losing the Magliozzi boys’ new programs every week… but let’s hear it from them:
RAY: Hey, you guys. My brother has always said, “Don’t be afraid of work.”
RAY: And he’s done such a good job at it, that work has avoided him all his life.
RAY: …and my brother turning over the birthday odometer to 75, we’ve decided that it’s time to stop and smell the cappuccino.
TOM: So as of October, we’re not going to be recording any more new shows. That’s right, we’re retiring.
RAY: So, we can finally answer the question, if my brother retired, how would he know?
TOM: The good news is that, despite our general incompetence, we actually remembered to hit the “record” button every week for the last 25 years. So we have more than 1,200 programs we’re going to dig into starting this fall, and the series will continue.
RAY: Every week, starting in October, NPR will broadcast a newly assembled Car Talk show, selected from the best material in our archives.
TOM: Sorry, detractors, we’re still going to be on the air!
Goodbye guys… take it from me, everyone has to retire sometime.

If you are from anywhere else in the great wide world, go to http://897wshc.org and tune in from there.
“Talk To Me” is on WSHC FM from 11 Am to 1 PM today and I’m getting my music list and discussion topics ready for the broadcast. If you are outside of our local area (we’re a very small university radio station at Shepherd U.) you can listen by going to the web site at http://897wshc.org/listen_live/index.html. and feel free to call in and, well, talk to me: 304-876-5369.
We have only one line, so if someone else is talking you’ll have to wait til they are done (and my regulars, Ralph and Stu, talk a lot.) I also don’t answer the phone when I’m playing old Bob and Ray cuts.
Elly is going to Frederick, MD, this morning for a student Graphic Design Portfolio Review for the Blue Ridge AIGA… this the third time she’s done the portfolio review and she’s going there with our friend, designer Jill Harner. That gives me most of the day to myself, so after the show I’ll be going back home to continue unpacking at the new house.
Another Saturday in West Virginia.
So help me, moving again is going to take more will than I think I have. We’re still hauling boxes and artwork and clothes and other stuff from 322 Starkey’s to the new house and it is an ongoing exhaustion creator.
To top it off it is raining this weekend and our helper students have football practice for much of it. When this is all done I’m going to sleep for two days straight and then get on with my life.
This morning on my radio show I was stumped for the first time on a play challenge, but, in general it went pretty well. Except, of course, that we weren’t on the internet due to a problem with the provider that the station is having. I’m sorry my regular out-of-town listeners couldn’t tune in today.
A wonderful film for a Wednesday Night:
Have a great time… more fun than watching politicians.
For those of you who are my radio listeners I’ll be on WSHC (89.7 FM) tomorrow morning from 7:30 AM to 9:00 AM substituting for John Case(on the web at http://www.897wshc.org).
I’m in the outer studio at WSHC FM getting my playlist ready for the 11 AM show (we’re up until 1:00 PM.) The station is 89.7 for those of you within 50 miles or so from Shepherd University (our owner) and on the internet at http://www.897wshc.org. Feel free to tune in… or call in at 304- 876- 5369.
We’re probably going to talk about some of the dreadful things Newt and
Mitt have been hurling at each other in Florida this week, among other things. Also, there is a production of Sweeney Todd opening next week at Shepherd, which I’m looking forward to… so they’ll be a little theatre discussion.
I expect that Ralph, Mark or Stu or some other of our regulars will be calling in as well. I also have my usual eclectic mix of music.
Have a nice day… I’m signing off for a couple of hours.
Our new schedule starts today now that Shepherd football season is over, and my Talk To Me show runs from 11:00 AM to 1:00 PM … delightfully scheduled over lunch (another reason why the audience will be minimal.) It’s also available during the same time period (EDT) at http://www.897wshc.org.
I’ve invited our local R&R expert, Ralph Petrie, to be my guest… I hope he shows up. Ralph, as you probably know, hosts The Extended Porch on Friday afternoons, plus he subs on a lot of shows when folks are away and is John Case and my biggest caller during our shows. I don’t know what we would do without Ralph’s input (he keeps us on our toes to do station IDs).
Anyway… I hope you will tune in … and call in at 304.876.5369.
… and I had a hard time finding a place to park to get into the radio show this morning. Alumni were wandering in clumps all around German Street and many were starting to head for the Stadium for the football game.
As of this morning the telephone is still not working in the studio, which makes call-ins on the show an impossibility. So far I have no guests to come in and talk. If I have any luck, I’ll find someone today.
I think I come on at 10:30 AM tomorrow… whatever time I do come on it will be just after Elliot Simon and just before the Football guys.
Hope you’ll tune in (and…on the longshot chance that the phone is fixed… call in.)
I’m not thrilled with either candidate, but I am upset with the dirty campaign Maloney and his crowd have run… so I am voting for Tomlinson.
CATF has announced the dates of the 2012 Season:
Hey… only 10 months away! Plan now!
I’ve been instructed to play no more show music on my radio show. It seems students don’t like it (too educational compared to really awful Rap that fills many afternoons). Yeah, it disturbs me, especially since Shepherd has a great Music Department that has produced wonderful musicals over the years. I guess their program doesn’t need support from WSHC radio.
We’re on a “regular schedule” tomorrow, which means my show, “Talk To Me” is on from 11 AM to 1 PM. I don’t have any special guests tomorrow, but the call-in line is up and running again (304-876-5369) and I’ll take in discussions on just about anything.
Folks away from our broadcasting area can pick up the show at www.897WSHC.org. Give me a call.
John Case and I did our usual Friday morning routine, although, if not for my wife’s car, I wouldn’t have made it on time… I discovered a dead battery in my car due to the back door being ajar and the rear interior light being on all night. Now I’m back and I can take care of jumping it.
Still planning my first Saturday radio show for 9:00 AM tomorrow… 2 hours to cover and still have no one to talk to (although John said he’d call in.) I’ll be going over to Mellow Moods in a little bit… maybe I can find someone there.
Ostensibly, I would like my show to be mostly conversation, but I fear tomorrow will be lots of music unless I get call-ins (304-876-5369) who want to discuss almost anything… even the SU Rams football game later in the day (that shows you how desperate I am.)
Maybe I’ll play some selections from my friend Jeff Haddow’s recent musical version of Jane Austen’s “Sense and Sensibility”… he just sent me the CD and it sounds pretty good. I also have the usual mix of rock, blues and folk.
Although the times may be moving around a little during football season, I am starting my new program this Saturday at 9:00 am, and this week we will be running until 11:00. I only got the word yesterday, so I may not be able to get guests to talk with… although eventually I want to do a lot of guest interviews and incoming phone calls from listeners. I’m calling the show “Talk To Me,” and that’s what is going to be the dominant theme.
I’ll be playing some of my esoteric song collection as well, the amount of which will depend on how much talk I can scare up. I’d like to talk about politics, the local arts scene, Shepherdstown business, and anything else my listeners want to converse about… within reason.
I’ll still be doing Friday mornings with John Case on Winners and Losers… I’ll ket you know more about my Saturday show then.
If you want to call in this Saturday, the phone number is 304-876-5369. We’ll be on WSHC, 89.7 on the FM dial, or http://www.897wshc.org on the internet. Hope you’ll be there.
…so tune into WSHC FM (89.7) at 7:30 AM (or if you are listening on line go to http://www.897wshc.org) and join me. I’ll be having Public Historian Will Tchakirides (my son!) discussing public history itself and the Anacostia Museum where he is currently designing a web site.
If you miss it, the recording will be at BlogTalkRadio, HERE .
You can call in during the half hour that it’s on at 1 (661) 554-9186. I’ll be glad to discuss just about anything with you.
Success, Success! I only did about 15 minutes since I was testing out the iPhone and connections, but it worked.
I’ll plan bigger and better for next Tuesday.
