Keeping this blog going requires your help…

…and I will give you a free gift if you make a donation of $5.00 or more…

…you get my absolutely most popular picture font:“Bill’s Broadway DECOrations” These images created from many traditional and period sources are very usable at any size in designs and publications. The font comes for Mac and PC, and I usually sell it for $29.95. It’s my way of saying “Thank You” to offer it to $5 or more donors.

So many of you have been following this blog since 2004 that I feel like a member of a huge web community.

I have enjoyed bringing you the Cartoon(s) of the Week, the Quotes, the Political and Arts News, the Blogrolls of the best sites in America and beyond… They are all a joy to put together. Often we get the breaking political stories before you see them anywhere else. And our wide open communication channels with readers can’t be beat. I offer your participation at all times and appreciate the hundreds of subscribers who sign up every year.

I really need YOUR help to keep it going. I’m hoping you will make a small contribution, by PayPal or credit/debit card, in support of Under The LobsterScope. You’d be amazed at how much $5.00 can do to help me bring more and more to these pages. And it is probably the LOWEST annual subscription fee you will make to any publication… interactive or not. I often receive larger contributions and I certainly appreciate those.

Remember, for a contribution of $5.00 (or MORE) you will receive a copy of my Picture Font, Bill’s Broadway DECOrations and the knowledge that this blog will continue onward.

(I send you font versions for both Macs and PCs by email, and include a typeface keyboard directory.
See the Sample Below.)

I should note that even a donation of $1.00 gets my thanks and helps to keep this blog going. By clicking on the DONATE button below, you tell me that Under The LobsterScope makes a difference in your time on the web.

Thanks,

– Bill T.

Cartoon(s) of the Week – Does anyone know where we’re heading?

It was a big week for cartoons… lots of problems, few solutions, and a political culture that is falling apart. There were over 25 contenders for this week’s winners, and 7 that made the cut:

Ben Sargent in Statesman.com:

Time to decide who an American really is…

– and –

Tom Toles in the Washington Post:

… because Americans have the right to worship where they want to…

– and –

Mike Luckovich in the Atlanta Journal-Co0nstitution:

… and the right to determine who their enemies are…

– and –

Pat Oliphant, NY Times News Service:

… Thankfully, the Republicans have a plan to solve everything (which they don’t want to announce)…

– and –

Jimmy Margulies in the North Jersey Record:

… although at least part of their plan is what got us into this mess in the first place…

– and –

Bruce Plante in the Tulsa World (a first-timer here):

…but maybe the Tea Baggers will get the who’s who of 21st Century Politics straight (or gay)…

– and –

David Horsey on SeattlePi.com:

… at least we have Obama to blame everything on!

I need your support to keep Under The LobsterScope going…

If you will make a donation of $5.00 or more and I will send you my FIRST PICTURE FONT:

BILL’S DINGBATS (worth $29.00).
Since 2004 I have been bringing you Under The LobsterScope totally free-of-charge and have avoided advertising or “blog begging” or any of the other methods of scavenging that blog writers are prone to. Unfortunately, this has had to change…just a little… to keep this information for progressives, liberals and others coming. The economy really has yours truly in a bind.

Even a small donation of $1 or $2 would help (although $5 helps a whole lot more.) The amount is up to you. We accept contributions through PayPal and the credit/debit cards shown below.

All contributors of $5.00 or more receive a copy of my Very First Picture Font, Bill’s Dingbats, that I created 22 years ago (I send you the versions for both Macs and PCs, plus a handy keyboard chart).

I appreciate those of you who have come on board over the last few days and hope more will join in. And for those of you $5 Plus donors who received our last three Free Fonts: Bill’s Universal Symbols, Bill’s Cast O’Characters and Bill’s Century Marks, you know what a good deal this is.

So please click on the “Donate” button below:

Last month was a very good one for donations to Under the LobsterScope…

… and I’d like to keep it up for June, if you will give me your much appreciated support. Back when I was an employed guy, the cost of spending time and money on the blog was very easy for me. As a “semi-retired” (read: unemployed thanks to the current economy) guy, just keeping the space going requires careful budgeting.

So I’m asking you to donate at least $5.00 to Under the LobsterScope, and if you do you get Bill’s Universal Symbols (worth $29.95) for FREE.

That’s it. $5.00 or more and I will send you this font (partial sample below) which is not available ANYWHERE ELSE (except, of course, on my UTF Type Foundry site.).

This offer is for a very limited time. Come July, Bill’s Universal Symbols comes off the Free list.

I appreciate those of you who have come on board over the last few days and hope more will join in. And for those of you $5 Plus donors who received our last two Free Fonts, Bill’s Cast O’Characters and Bill’s Century Marks, you know what a good deal this is.

(PS… my sincere thanks to Christine Jackman who made a contribution larger than the minimum and said she didn’t need the font. I could sure use more readers like that.)

If you read nothng else today, please read Bob Herbert’s column in the New York Times…

It is called Our Epic Foolishness, it sums up clearly where we are right now:

If a bank is too big to fail, it’s way too big to exist. If an oil well is too far beneath the sea to be plugged when something goes wrong, it’s too deep to be drilled in the first place.

When are we going to stop behaving so stupidly? We nearly wrecked the economy and we’re all but buried in debt. But we can’t break up the biggest banks, and we can’t raise taxes. Now we’re fouling the magnificent Gulf of Mexico and ruining entire communities along the southern Louisiana Coast.

And, by the way, we’re still fighting a futile war in Afghanistan that we’ve been fighting with nonstop futility for nearly a decade. (I’m sure the troops saddled with this thankless task were thrilled to see fans and teams demonstrating their undying support for their efforts by wearing fancy baseball caps on Memorial Day.)

Herbert goes over the things we have to do… develop non-fossil fuel energy, weatherize our homes, creation of a carbon tax to force down use, etc, etc, etc… and expresses his doubts that it will happen.

All around us is the wreckage of our failure to master the challenges confronting us. We see it in the many millions of Americans who remain out of work and whose hopes are not rising despite all the talk of economic recovery. We see it in the schools where teachers are walking the plank by the scores of thousands because of state and local budget problems.

We see it in the shrinking middle class and in the black community where depressionlike conditions are fostering not just a sense of helplessness, but despair.

What’s needed is dynamic leadership (it doesn’t have to come from the top) to reinvigorate the spirit of America and turn that sense of helplessness around.

Doesn’t have to come from the top? That’s good… it doesn’t seem to be coming from there now.

This Memorial Day, why not send a contribution to Under The LobsterScope…and get a FREE FONT.

Donate at least $5.00 you get Bill’s Universal Symbols (worth $29.95) for FREE.

A Reward for the Supporters of Under The LobsterScope

So many of you have been following this blog since 2004 that I feel like a member of a huge web community.

The Hunting of the Snark has a new Problem… We’ve lost one of the major performers!

I got a call tonite from the fellow who was playing The Butcher in Hunting of the Snark, one of the best parts, and, due to a family illness and a Mother in the hospital, he has to pull out.

Geeps… we have less than a month until opening and I was already short one of the smaller male parts. Now I have to find 2 performers who are available immediately, can sing, and, since this is Community Theater, will work for free.

I fully believe this will be a great experience for anyone in the part… but I am out of people who auditioned and I don’t know anyone else. Tomorrow I’ll poll the cast and see who they can come up with.

I’m never going to sleep tonite!

(btw – if you are in the Shepherdstown area and would be interested in taking one of these parts, let me know at btchakir@mac.com… I’ll be glad to hear from you.)

If Under The LobsterScope didn’t NEED your support, I wouldn’t be asking for it…

This to my readers:

I want you to know how much I have enjoyed bringing this to you since 2004: The Cartoon or Cartoons of the Week, the Quotes, the Political and Arts News, the Blogrolls to the best sites in America and beyond… They are all a joy to put together. Images from Haiti

This thanks to CBS and Reuters:

Aside from the support from the US which was virtually immediate, support has come in from China, Brazil and other countries. I’m going to relist where you can send $$$ to help. May I also suggest that anyone who was going to make a donation to Pat Robertson’s ministry, via the 700 Club or other means. give that cash to one of the following Haiti support sites:

The American Red Cross is pledging an initial $200,000 to assist communities impacted by this earthquake. They expect to provide immediate needs for food, water, temporary shelter, medical services and emotional support. They are accepting donations through their International Response Fund.

•UNICEF has issued a statement that “Children are always the most vulnerable population in any natural disaster, and UNICEF is there for them.” UNICEF requests donations for relief for children in Haiti via their Haiti Earthquake Fund. You can also call 1-800-4UNICEF.

•Donate through Wyclef Jean’s foundation, Yele Haiti. Text “Yele” to 501501 and $5 will be charged to your phone bill and given to relief projects through the organization.

•Operation USA is appealing for donations of funds from the public and corporate donations in bulk of health care materials, water purification supplies and food supplements which it will ship to the region from its base in the Port of Los Angeles. Donate online at www.opusa.org, by phone at 1-800-678-7255 or, by check made out to Operation USA, 3617 Hayden Ave, Suite A, Culver City, CA 90232.

Just as a side comment, here’s why I’m so glad Rush Limbaugh is aligned with Neo-Conservatives and not with human beings… this from the HuffPo:

Well, it didn’t take long for conservative firebrand Rush Limbaugh to use the crisis in Haiti to attack President Obama politically. On his radio show yesterday Limbaugh said the earthquake in Haiti will play right into Obama’s hands by allowing him to play up his “compassionate” and “humanitarian” credentials, and that the President will use this crisis to “boost his credibility with the black community.”

As if that weren’t enough, Limbaugh also pivoted off a caller who complained about Obama directing the public to the White House website to find charitable organizations operating in Haiti to promote a conspiracy theory that finding these charities via the White House website puts your money at risk of not reaching Haitians.

Limbaugh also seems to feel we’ve done enough already for Haiti: “We’ve already donated to Haiti. It’s called the U.S. income tax.”

UPDATE: WARNING
Dylan Ratigan made a disturbing announcement on his show this afternoon, Apparently Credit Card companies are slicing a fee off of donations going to Haiti…the one exception that he found was American Express. Ratigan was starting an alert to get people to call and complain about the practice by the other card companies… they may have pulled the fees by now… but it’s worth checking to see if these capitalist pigs are taking advantage of an international tragedy.

Dear Mr. President:

I don’t know if you get to read incoming e-mail. I doubt it, as I know the value of your time in running the country and still finding some room for your wife, children and dog. However, I would like to offer you a couple of points from my not-so-unique position as an unemployed American with two college degrees who worked on your campaign steadily for many months last year… and who is now getting more and more disappointed in your progress, or lack thereof.

“Progress” is the key word here. The expectation of so many of us who walked from door to door or sealed and sent mailing pieces or stood at intersections waving signs instead of going home to our families in the evening was that your Presidency, tied with the majorities for the Democratic Party in both Houses of Congress, would bring us out of the fiscal slurry that the Bush Administration had sunk our lower extremities in. Oh, I know you have made accomplishments… that somehow you and Bernanke saved us from a Depression with a fairly hideous Recession, that you started a process to close Gitmo and began making buddies again with the rest of the world. I know all of that.

What I can’t understand is why, after the huge effort you put into the election campaign making us all convinced you were a Progressive Hope for all of us, you have really become a mostly talk and let others do the action kind of guy. I speak specifically about Rahm Emanuel, who seems to really run the domestic policies that are fed out to the Congress, about Tim Geithner and the rest financial service types who made sure their industry was protected first while your small voters, who could not commit the millions in campaign bucks that you seem all too willing to sell us off for, cut down on their grocery shopping and debated the best way to come up with their kids’ tuition over mortgage payments, and about the Military’s need to keep us involved in the most unnecessary confrontation anyone could imagine, making our international debt so huge that even words don’t describe it.

I can’t understand why the Health Care deals where made with the Pharmaceutical companies and the lobbyists from the Insurance industry, and the Liebermans and Nelsons and other bought and paid for types, and not with the cast majority of people who elected you…people who once thought there was a chance at a single-payer solution to Health Care and who continued to think they would still get an advantage with the now vanished Public Option.

We thought you wanted to change things.

Instead, you have worked yourself into a sticky and overgrown corner where just getting out is nearly impossible. While it is possible that you might reevaluate the situation before the Fall and the 2010 Congressional elections start and get into the fray yourself (and, frankly, tell your current policy wonks to listen to the people who elected you OR ELSE), the reality seems to be that all the changes we had hoped for have been sidelined by the most controllable of uncontrollable things.

I hope you had a chance to watch, or listen to, or at least read a transcript of Bill Moyers’ Journal from the 18th of the month (and one that had not been edited by your staff to remove the highlights that they are most involved in). If not, I think you should note that the first half of the program is something is something that you should pay close attention to. It’s called “Is Washington For Sale?” and it features some very clear words from Matt Taibbi of Rolling Stone and Economist Robert Kuttner. You can see it on line at http://www.pbs.org/moyers/journal/12182009/watch.html, if you are able to get on line. I hope you can. Hell, you’re the President. Call PBS and ask them to send you a DVD!

It is so important that you become aware of what the community of Americans, who gave the government to you and the Congress not so long ago, think. All our futures are tied together, but you have your hand on the knot.

Regards,

Bill Tchakirides
