The Final Results of the Election…
If you haven’t seen where everything finally ended up after Florida was called (which took an awfully long time and right up to the very end the GOP said Romney had it… but he didn’t), then here it is:
This, to me, is a sure sign that Obama has a mandate to finish his agenda. To win by 126 electoral votes is not insignificant… it is a real rollover.
Now we will listen to Boehner claim that he is ready to cooperate, but will keep the House just a opposed to increasing taxes on the very rich and solving the rest of the economic problems. Will the House Republicans finally support Obama’s goal to increase jobs? Looks like they are going to stay just as opposed. Didn’t they learn anything from the election?
Mitch McConnell will probably keep the Republicans in the Senate from letting things go through, although they are still in the minority. McConnell is up for reelection in Kentucky in 2014, so maybe he will cooperate a little bit just to show that he’s not a schmuck. We’ll wait and see.

Looks like Florida is the one to keep an eye on. While Romney leads in 2 out of three polls, this is a REAL swing state that could go either way. I’m not sure the tie in North Carolina really goes to Obama. Nate seems to think it will.

Michael Bloomberg, Mayor of NYC, who has not supported either candidate today endorsed Obama for the Presidency. It seems Obama’s actions on Sandy pushed him over the edge.

A new Gallup poll finds a majority of Americans continue to believe that President Obama will win re-election Tuesday over Mitt Romney, by 54% to 34%.

Both of these show changes: Romney up in New Hampshire and Obama leading in Nevada. Also, remember: 270 Electoral votes to win.

Ex-Senator and former Presidential Candidate George McGovern in a South Dakota Hospice.
“He’s coming to the end of his life,” McGovern’s daughter, Ann, stated. She didn’t elaborate but noted that her 90-year-old father has suffered several health problems in the last year.
George McGovern became a leader of the Democrats’ liberal wing during his three decades in Congress but lost his 1972 challenge to Richard Nixon. McGovern turned his focus in recent years to world hunger.
It was after a lecture tour a year ago that he was treated for exhaustion, then two months later, he fell and hit his head.
McGovern spent several days in a Florida hospital in April for tests to determine why he occasionally passed out and had difficulty speaking. His daughter said he has moved in the Dougherty Hospice House in Sioux Falls, SD, where he moved in August to spend more time near his family.
McGovern was a member of the U.S. House from 1957 to 1961 and a U.S. senator from 1963 to 1981.

It looks like Romney is gaining an advantage… we’ll be seeing in a couple of days what last night’s VP debate does to the calculations, but meanwhile we are here:

OK… where is registration heading in swing states?
A Bloomberg analysis finds that Democrats hold the registration advantage over Republicans in four of six battleground states that will play a key role in the presidential election.
“Democrats have the edge over Republicans in Florida, Iowa, Nevada and North Carolina. In Colorado and New Hampshire, Republicans outnumber Democrats, according to the analysis of state data. Three other battlegrounds — Ohio, Virginia and Wisconsin — don’t report registration statistics by party.”

OK… 42 days to go until election day (although half the states have started early or absentee voting already) and the swing states are still in Obama‘s favor and increasing that way. Here we are today:

Mormon may be excommunicated because of his web site critical of the LDS church and Mitt Romney…
David Twede, a fifth-generation Mormon publishes MormonThink, a Web site which debates church teaching. The site has drawn increased traffic as Mormons turn to the Internet to find answers to controversial questions about Mormon history and traditions that the church does not address.

The church has come under heightened scrutiny with the presidential candidacy of Mitt Romney, a Mormon who once served as a bishop. The church went through a spate of public excommunications of prominent scholars and feminists in the early 1990s, but in recent years public excommunications of dissidents have been rare, church experts said.
Mr. Twede’s situation was first reported on Friday by the Web site The Daily Beast, which suggested that Mr. Twede was being disciplined because he had posted several articles on MormonThink critical of Mr. Romney.
After being interrogated in a church office for 45 minutes, Twede commented:
“They said that they felt I was a spy and a wolf in sheep’s clothing. They said that they need to protect the flock from the Antichrist, from an apostate.”

Take a look:
There are about 2 months left for about 114,000 residents who have been shut out of the vote, be they seniors or blacks or hispanics. We should all be working to clean up this mess.
UNITED STATES DISTRICT COURT-MIDDLE DISTRICT OF FLORIDA issued a ruling on August 21 striking down some of the Florida restrictions… especially the trimming down of early voting dates.
Let’s see what happens now.

Wow! Charlie Crist Endorses Obama!
Charlie Crist, former Republican Governor of Florida and now an Independent, has endorsed Barack Obama in an article in the Tampa Bay Times. This could have a major effect on more centrist Republicans at the convention and reduce the influence of the Tea Party. Here’s part of the article:
As Republicans gather in Tampa to nominate Mitt Romney, Americans can expect to hear tales of how President Obama has failed to work with their party or turn the economy around.
But an element of their party has pitched so far to the extreme right on issues important to women, immigrants, seniors and students that they’ve proven incapable of governing for the people. Look no further than the inclusion of the Akin amendment in the Republican Party platform, which bans abortion, even for rape victims.
The truth is that the party has failed to demonstrate the kind of leadership or seriousness voters deserve.
Pundits looking to reduce something as big as a statewide election to a single photograph have blamed the result of my 2010 campaign for U.S. Senate on my greeting of President Obama. I didn’t stand with our president because of what it could mean politically; I did it because uniting to recover from the worst financial crisis of our lifetimes was more important than party affiliation. I stood with our nation’s leader because it was right for my state.
President Obama has a strong record of doing what is best for America and Florida, and he built it by spending more time worrying about what his decisions would mean for the people than for his political fortunes. That’s what makes him the right leader for our times, and that’s why I’m proud to stand with him today.
Crist’s endorsement has raised a lot of controversy in the press and everyone wonders how effective it will be.

The Latino vote is heavily weighted in Obama’s favor as of now…
In a poll by Latino Decisions released today, President Obama’s numbers are rising to 70% of registered Latino voters, compared Romney’s 22%. If that margin held until the election, it would certainly influence Latino voters in battleground states such as Florida, Nevada and Colorado.
Romney’s not giving up, however. He uses Florida Sen. Marco Rubio as a surrogate, and even though the word has leaked from his campaign that Rubio would not be a vice presidential pick, Romney is still hinting that he might.
His latest Spanish-language ad features his Spanish speaking son, Craig, talking about something Romney rarely mentions: the fact that his father, George Romney, was born in Mexico.
In the ad, Craig Romney says:
“I would like to tell you how my father, Mitt Romney, thinks. He values very much that we are a nation of immigrants. My grandfather George was born in Mexico. For our family the greatness of the United States is how we respect and help each other, regardless of where we come from. As president, my father will work on a permanent solution to the immigration system, working with leaders of both parties.”
… and if you believe that, I have a great bridge to sell you.
