Best Commercial Idea I’ve Seen This Year…

Do people steal your lunch out of the refrigerator at work? A company called “the” has come up with the answer: anti-theft lunch bags.

For $8, you receive 25 plastic sandwich bags with strategically placed green splotches on the surface, to make the contents inside look like something no one would want to steal, let alone eat.

Five percent of the lunch bag proceeds will go to Freedom From Hunger.

Why aren’t they prosecuting Whitey for EVERYTHING?

James "Whitey" Bulger

Who says the elusive Bulger still has no influence in Boston?

The Federal prosecutors have moved to drop a 1994 racketeering indictment against mob boss “Whitey” Bulger including charges of extortion, loan sharking, witness tampering and conspiracy.

U.S. Attorney Carmen Ortiz says prosecutors consider a later 1999 indictment charging Bulger with 19 murders the stronger case, since faces life in prison on those charges. Doesn’t he also face life if you add the other charges? Maybe several lives.

Why take a chance with a guy who already eluded them for 16 years?

Here’s to the FBI – they’ve finally nabbed Whitey Bulger…

It took 16 years with James “Whitey” Bulger on top of the FBI’s 10 Most Wanted list, but yesterday they grabbed the former gang leader, alleged murderer (wanted for 19 killings) and all-around bad Bostonian in Santa Monica, CA.

Bulger had a $2 Million reward on his head… the highest ever offered on an FBI wanted criminal. His girlfriend, Catherine Greig, also captured had a $100 Thousand reward attached to her.

At one time Bulger was an FBI informant and used that position as a means of actually committing robberies and murders and getting his competition out of the way. His brother, William “Billy” Bulger had been a well-known Boston politician and, later, the President of the University of Massachusetts, and admittedly withheld information on Whitey for years,

Catherine Greig

eventually costing him his job.

However, it was only recently after years of embarrassment with books and movies made about Whitey that the FBI actually stepped up it’s investigation. Recently they started focusing on Greig, a former Dental Hygienist known to frequent beauty parlors and plastic surgeons, as a means of capturing Whitey. Recently, in this context, the released a video in cities where Bulger had been spotted over the years:

There has been no mention of who, if anyone, received any of the awards for information leading to Bulger and Greig.

Ramona is asking such important questions this morning…

I love reading Ramona’s pieces. This one began:

Fox News and the C of C thank you for voting Republican. But don’t call us, we’ll call you.
So, all you “Mad as Hell” people who idolize Fox “News” and their partners in crime, the Koch Brothers, the Chamber of Commerce, and the Republican Party, let’s hear what you’ve learned from that bunch you’ve been following so religiously. What’s the plan? What’s marvels are in store for you when they take out the government and make it obsolete?”

…and then went on:

Wait a minute–you haven’t asked?  Okay, then.  Obviously you haven’t been thinking about it, but I have.  I’ve made up a list of questions for you to ask as soon as you’ve put all those constitution-loving patriots back in the cat-bird seat:
How soon will all the jobs be back?
What’s the forecast for a booming housing market?
Can we stop paying taxes now?
When will all wars end?
Can we get the the gays and liberals and non-Christians and brown-skinned people out of our sight ASAP?
Now can we force all kids to pray in school?
How soon before the poor aren’t among us?
Do we have to take our guns to town?
When you outlaw abortions are you going to expect me to take care of those little brats?
When DC is a ghost town will the rents go down? Why is Obamacare bad again?

and last but not least (because this one is very, very, very important):

Do you like me?  Do you really, really like me?

Thanks, Ramona.

(Don’t tell her the dog’s real name is Santiago!) (via HYSTERICAL RAISINS)

Are there any politicians who don’t lie about their history? This is another big one from Hysterical Raisins:

(Don't tell her the dog's real name is Santiago!) From POLITICS DAILY: Arizona Governor Jan Brewer finds herself under scrutiny after telling a newspaper that her father “died fighting the Nazi regime in Gemany.” In actuality, Brewer’s father, Wilford Drinkwine, passed away from lung disease in California, ten years after World War II had ended. Brewer’s comments were made to The Arizona Republic [actually, it’s The Arizona Guardian] newspaper, and came as she was discussing her state’s polarizi … Read More

A Statement on Goldman Sachs

Here’s a brief clip from a Matt Taibbi article in the Guardian:

Last summer I wrote a brutally negative article about Goldman Sachs for Rolling Stone magazine (I called the bank a “great vampire squid wrapped around the face of humanity”) that unexpectedly sparked a heated national debate. On one side of the debate were people like me, who believed that Goldman is little better than a criminal enterprise that earns its billions by bilking the market, the government, and even its own clients in a bewildering variety of complex financial scams.

On the other side of the debate were the people who argued Goldman wasn’t guilty of anything except being “too smart” and really, really good at making money. This side of the argument was based almost entirely on the Randian belief system, under which the leaders of Goldman Sachs appear not as the cheap swindlers they look like to me, but idealised heroes, the saviours of society.

I think I have a stronger agreement with the criminal enterprise… for what you may think, go in and read the whole article HERE.

Coal Mine Disaster Update

It now looks like the mine, about 30 miles south of Charleston, has a significant history of safety violations, including 57 infractions just last month for (among other things) not properly ventilating the highly combustible methane.

It has also ignored many of these violation notices, refused to pay fines and in the past year, faced federal fines of more than $382,000 for repeated serious violations involving its ventilation plan and equipment at Upper Big Branch.

Massey CEO Don Blankenship has a history of bribing politicians and judges and threatening reporters who bring the mine’s violations public. Check out some from the last four years on ABC HERE.

Unfortunately, it looks like Senators Byrd and Rockefeller looked the other way as well.

Here’s news we didn’t need this morning… Why do we get into this war crap?

I woke up to this in both the NY TImes and HuffPo this morning: “U.S. Admits Role in February Killing of Afghan Women”. And not only did we admit doing it, we admitted covering it up.

War has got to STOP. We are not protecting ourselves. We are not protecting our allies. We are simply spending money and doing outrageous things!

KABUL, Afghanistan — After initially denying involvement or any cover-up in the deaths of three Afghan women during a badly bungled American Special Operations assault in February, the American-led military command in Kabul admitted late on Sunday that its forces had, in fact, killed the women during the nighttime raid.

The admission immediately raised questions about what really happened during the Feb. 12 operation — and what falsehoods followed — including a new report that Special Operations forces dug bullets out of the bodies of the women to hide the true nature of their deaths.

The disclosure could not come at a worse moment for the American military: NATO officials are struggling to contain fallout from a series of tirades against the foreign military presence by the Afghan president, Hamid Karzai, who has also railed against the killing of civilians by Western forces.

Quote of the Day – This led Thom Hartmann’s Blog today…

“Army psychiatrist Hasan accused in the Fort Hood shootings is charged with 13 counts of premeditated murder in the military’s legal system, making him eligible for the death penalty. Given that he had corresponded with an Imam in Yemen, had George Bush been president we’d now be bombing Yemen and in another war. Instead, a criminal will be prosecuted, families will get closure, and America won’t further inflame the world’s 1.6 billion Muslims or feed the extremists among them. What a difference it makes to have a sane president!”

Thom Hartmann

I couldn’t agree more.

Here’s an article from The Nation…

This is the start of the article… I suggest you read it all. This is disturbing:

US Still Paying Blackwater Millions
Just days before two former Blackwater
employees alleged
in sworn statements filed in federal court that
the company’s owner, Erik Prince, “views himself as a Christian crusader
tasked with eliminating Muslims and the Islamic faith from the globe,”
the Obama administration extended a contract with Blackwater for more
than $20 million for “security services” in Iraq, according to federal
contract data obtained by The Nation. The State Department
contract is scheduled to run through September 3. In May, the State
Department announced it was not renewing Blackwater’s Iraq contract, and
the Iraqi government has refused to issue the company an operating
license.
Despite its scandal-plagued track record, Blackwater (which has
rebranded itself as Xe) continues to have a presence in Iraq, trains
Afghan forces on US contracts and provides government-funded training
for military and law enforcement inside the
United States.

Bernie Madoff Gets 150 years!

Bernie Madoff, the biggest self-confessed fraudster in US history, will spend the rest of his life in prison, having defrauded his investors to the tune of $65 Billion.

According to the BBC, US District Judge Denny Chin said that Madoff’s crimes were “extraordinarily evil.”

If only some of the other extraordinarily evil criminals of the last decade could get theirs… say, for starting wars without cause where Americans died by the thousands… then I might believe in a just society again.
