Quote of the Day – Why are we in Afghanistan? asks Fareed Zakaria

“If Al Qaeda is down to 100 men there at the most, why are we fighting a major war?

“Last month alone there were more than 100 NATO troops killed in Afghanistan. That’s more than one allied death for each living Al Qaeda member in the country in just one month.

“The latest estimates are that the war in Afghanistan will cost more than $100 billion in 2010 alone. That’s a billion dollars for every member of Al Qaeda thought to be living in Afghanistan in one year.”

Damned if I don’t agree with him

4th of July

I’ve had a lovely Fourth so far… did the Farmer’s market with Elly this morning (which takes place in the block behind the Shepherdstown Library) where it’s always pleasant walking around looking at the produce and seeing if there is anything organic that we need. Then we had lunch at Mellow Moods and wandered around German Street a little.

At 3:30 I went back to the center of town to see our very small 4th of July Parade (which is followed by a picnic at Rumsey Park)… took a lot of pictures which I may show some of to my blog readers when I’m not on my wife’s computer and can download to my photography software.

Shepherdstown is not having fireworks this year… budget problems with the recession… and we don’t really want to drive over to Martinsburg, so I guess we’ll watch the DC fireworks on television.

Anyway, I hope everyone is having a great Fourth.
